SANSKRIT INSCRIPTION FROM KĀVĀNTAṆḌALAM

The following inscription is from the Lakṣmi Nārāyana temple of Kāvāntaṇḍalam near Kāñcīpuram. The inscription is engraved on the west wall of the temple. The inscription was published in the VII volume of South Indian Inscriptions with the number 422. The inscription can be dated as 9th CE on paleographical ground. The inscription refers to the building the temple by some Mānasarpa. Since meaning is not given there, I am hereby translating the inscription. The lines of the inscription are

Line 1 : स्वस्तिश्री नमो नारायणाय। महीसुरमहारत्नप्रसूतिप्रवराकरे। धात्रा वसुन्धरावासनिरतेनैव निर्म्मिते।। सहिता रमया यत्र भारती रमतेतराम्। अगोचरे चतुर्व्वेदिमङ्गले कलिकर्म्मणाम्।। अकरोद

Line 2 : रविन्दलोचनस्य स्वशरीरस्थजगत्त्रयस्य धाम स्थिरताजितवज्रशैलसारम् परमानन्दविधायि शोभया यत्।। भुजनिर्ज्जितकल्पकः कलानां सकलानां पतिरिन्दुवद्विवस्वानुदयाचलतुंगशृंगसंगी रिपुसेनातिमिरस्य मानसर्प्पः।

Line 3 : आत्रेयगोत्रतिलकाय लसद्गुणाय नारायणाय मुनये विदुषे तदादात्। अभ्यर्च्च्य भोक्तुमुरगाशनकेतनन्तं भूखण्डमन्यदपि यत्कृतमर्च्चनार्थम्।।

Line 1 : svastiśrī namo nārāyaṇāya| mahīsuramahāratnaprasūtipravarākare| dhātrā vasundharāvāsaniratenaiva nirmmite|| sahitā ramayā yatra bhāratī ramatetarām| agocare caturvvedimaṅgale kalikarmmaṇām|| akaroda

Line 2 : ravindalocanasya svaśarīrasthajagattrayasya dhāma sthiratājitavajraśailasāram paramānandavidhāyi śobhayā yat|| bhujanirjjitakalpakaḥ kalānāṁ sakalānāṁ patirinduvadvivasvānudayācalatuṁgaśṛṁgasaṁgī ripusenātimirasya mānasarppaḥ|

Line 3 : ātreyagotratilakāya lasadguṇāya nārāyaṇāya munaye viduṣe tadādāt| abhyarccya bhoktumuragāśanaketanantaṁ bhūkhaṇḍamanyadapi yatkṛtamarccanārtham||

स्वस्तिश्री नमो नारायणाय।

Hail, Salutations to Nārāyaṇa.

महीसुरमहारत्नप्रसूतिप्रवराकरे।

धात्रा वसुन्धरावासनिरतेनैव निर्म्मिते।।

सहिता रमया यत्र भारती रमतेतराम्।

अगोचरे चतुर्व्वेदिमङ्गले कलिकर्म्मणाम्।।

In the Caturvedi Maṅgala, which is like a ocean of gem like Brahmins, which was made by Brahmā as an eternal one in the world, where Sarasvatī plays along with the Lakṣmī (rich pundits are denoted), Which is beyond to the eyes of evil persons.

अकरोदरविन्दलोचनस्य स्वशरीरस्थजगत्त्रयस्य

धाम स्थिरताजितवज्रशैलसारम् परमानन्दविधायि शोभया यत्।।

भुजनिर्ज्जितकल्पकः कलानां सकलानां पतिरिन्दुव

द्विवस्वानुदयाचलतुंगशृंगसंगी रिपुसेनातिमिरस्य मानसर्प्पः।

Mānasarpa, conqueror of Kalpa Vṛkṣa by his arms, master of all arts like the moon, Sun which is in cognition with the higher peaks of Udaya parvata for the darkness like enemies, made the temple, which excels a diamond hill by its stability and which showers pleasure by its beauty, for Viṣṇu, whose eyes are like lotus and on whose body the three worlds are lying.

आत्रेयगोत्रतिलकाय लसद्गुणाय नारायणाय मुनये विदुषे तदादात्।

अभ्यर्च्च्य भोक्तुमुरगाशनकेतनन्तं भूखण्डमन्यदपि यत्कृतमर्च्चनार्थम्।।

He gave the entire village to Nārāyaṇa muni, a great scholar from ātreya gotra and embodiment of good qualities to worship Viṣṇu, the garuḍa dhvaja. Another piece of land was also bestowed on him for the same purpose.

Mānasarpa referred here seems to be a sāmanta to Kampavarmā since inscriptions of the later are found in the temple. The present structure is totally a renewed one except the Adhiṣṭhāna and two pillars at the mukhamaṇḍapa.
