RAṄGANĀTHA SHIFTED DURING MUSLIM INVASION

We know that the kings of Indian regions, though occupied the regions and possessions of enemies, didn’t do any harm to the temples built by the enemies. But the foreign invasion didn’t follow the rule. During the invasion of Māli kafūr, almost most of the big temples of Tamilnadu suffered a lot. Even Raṅganātha wasn’t spared. The idol was taken into Tirupati and then to Ceñji. The following inscription states this incident. It records that Gopaṇṇa took the idol of Raṅganātha to Tirupati and then to Ceñji, his capital and after defeating the muslims, he restored the image to śrīraṅgam and installed there with Lakṣmi and Bhūdevi. The inscription is dated by the chronogram “Bandhupriya” which can be extracted as ya – 1, pri – 2, dhu-9 and ba -3 means 1293 śaka varṣa equaled to 1371 CE. The inscription is engraved on the east wall of the second prākāra.

Gopaṇṇa, the wise person and mirror of fame, took the image of Raṅganātha from Añjanādri (Tirupati) which entertains the world by its blue colour peak to Ceñji and worshipped for some time and after destroying the Tuluṣkas (Muslims), the mighty warriors and then installed him in his own town (śrīraṅga) along with śrīdevī and Bhūdevi. He made required arrangements for the worship of Raṅganātha.

Gopaṇa, the king, took Raṅgarāja, the lord of the worlds from Vṛṣabhagiri (Tirupati) to his own capital and destroyed the prided army of Turuṣkas. He led the soil of śriraṅgam to Kṛtayuga along with Lakṣmī and Bhūmi. He installed them as Brahmā and made efforts for well arrangements of worship.

Thus the inscription informs us about the Muslim invasion. The names of two mountains of Tirupati, viz Añjanādri and Vṛṣabhādri are mentioned in this inscription.

  1. Dear Sankarnarayanan,
You are a great scholar. Why not edit your first line of this article?
Vatapi was burnt down by Pallavas, the vinayaga from Vatapi is allegedly in Thiruchengattukudi
We see Pala, Noolamba sculptures and Bronzes in various temples in TN brought back from various invasions, were these non-violent displacements.
We have also seen donations by the conquerer in the land conquered
Did all Himdu Kings conquer and bestow donations on the temples in conquered land.
You can write a book on how many hands Tirupathi temples changed – you do know it.

Can we refrain from foreign invaders issue.
We should also not forget British gave the lease rentals for temple lands in advance from their treasury and then collected the rues from the cultivators. You know too well the situation today.
    This my request to you.

    Regards
    Arvind
