ŚRĪ RAṄGAM INSCRIPTION OF SUNDARA PĀṆḌYA

            The following inscription is inscribed on the east faces of four pillars in front of the central shrine of Raṅganātha svāmi temple śrī Raṅgam. The inscription is recorded in the ARE report 1892 with the number 60 and the text alone is published in the SII Vol IV with the number 507. The inscription gives the details of the golden works done by Jaṭāvarma Sundara Pāṇḍya (1251-1268 CE) to the temple with the gold he gave through Tulābhāra. The first line contains the beginning of some mei kīrti but left unfinished.

Hail.

जेता सुन्दरपाण्ड्यदेवनृपतिर्भूपो द्वितीयान्तुला

मारुह्य प्रददौ हिरण्यनिचयं श्रीरंगिणे शार्ङ्गिणे।

येनाशेषहिरण्मयस्स भगवान्हैमे विमाने वसन्

भासन्मण्डलमध्यवासजनितां लक्ष्मीन्निजां पुष्यति।

            Sundara Pāṇḍya, the conquering king, gave bunch of gold through second Tulābhāra to the Śārṅgi (Viṣṇu) who resides at Śrī Raṅga. The lord dwelling in the full golden temple made by the charity of him, nurtures Lakśmī (wealth) who resides amidst of the glowing region.

आजौ सिंहणमुन्मदस्य करिणो दत्वा परार्त्थन्ततो

दृष्ट्वा राममहीपतेः प्रशमितक्षेमाभिषंगो भुवः।

वीरस्सुन्दरपाण्ड्यभूपतिरसौ भूयस्तुलारोहणा

द्रंगेन्द्रं गिरिमैन्द्रनीलमकरोद्धन्यः सुवर्णाचलम्।।

       Sundara Pāṇḍya, embodiment of Valor, made the temple which looks like golden hill to Indranīla hill by giving another Tulābhāra after conquering Siṃhaṇa with his numberless elephants and the king Rāma (Nātha) in the battle.

मकुटचयैर्विजित्य यदुकेरलचोलनृपां

स्तदुपहृतैर्बलाद्विरधिरूढतुलाभरितैः।

कनकमयं विमानमखिलं शयनञ्च हरे

रिह सुकृतादरादकृत सुन्दरपाण्ड्यनृपः।।

            The king Sundara Pāṇḍya, made the whole sanctum and the sleeping room of Hari covered with gold by another Tulābhāra he obtained with valor from Yadu, Kerala and Coḷa kings along with their diadems.

आरूढस्सकला विजित्य  ककुभो रंगे द्वितीयान्तुला

मर्त्थैः केरळचोळहोय्सलकुलक्षोणीभृतामाहृतैः।

शय्यावेश्म भुजंगराजशयनद्वारं वितानम् बहि

स्सालं सुन्दरपाण्ड्यदेवनृपतिर्हैमान्निचक्रे हरेः।।

            The king Sundara Pāṇḍya deva entered into second Tulā after conquering all directions and defeating Kerala, Coḹa, Hoysala kings. By the wealth he covered sleeping room, the sanctum where he reclines on the king of serpents, the roof and the compound with gold.

            Thus the charity of SundaraPāṇḍya to Śrī Raṅga is well explained in this inscription.
