SIVANVĀYIL INSCRIPTION OF SIṂHAVARMĀ – EARLIEST EPIGRAPH IN GRANTHA SCRIPT

This inscription was found in a village Śivanvāsal situated 15 kilometers from Tiruvaḷḷūr. The inscription was discovered from an old temple dedicated for Vaikuṇṭhanātha and the stone containing the inscription was used as step.

The inscription is the example of archaic variety of Grantha script and in Sanskrit college. The inscription was published by Śrī. N.Veṅkaṭaramaṇayya in the Twenty seventh volume of Epigraphia Indica and assigned second quarter of 7th CE for the same. The inscription describes Siṃhavarmā of Pallava dynasty. He is said to have performed Daśāśvamedha and Bahusuvarṇa yāgas. Since he considered the date as 7th CE, he declared the king was of a collateral branch of Pallava dynasty. The later scholars reexamined the same and revised date as third quarter of 6th CE and claimed that the king is Siṃhavarmā III, father of Siṃhaviṣṇu. We know that the Paḷḷaṅkovil plates of the same king were discovered in Grantha and Tamil script. But since the letters are of later times, the charter is considered to be the later copy of the original one. Hence it can be claimed that the grantha script was in use since the period of Siṃhavarmā III of which the later copy is available today.

But the present inscription is considered to be the contemporary to the king and can be considered as the earliest inscription in Grantha script. Though no clear information is available in the inscription, this is very significant one since this is the earliest available inscription in Grantha script. So far it is considered that Mahendra Pallava was the pioneer of the script. But the present charter make us to revise the thought.

In the race of Pallavas which removes the entire calamities of the subjects, Siṃhavarma Deva, the elephant to the great army, performer of Daśāśvamedha and Bahusuvarṇṇa and an embodiment of valor, like Viṣvaksena in the Vṛṣṇi race. Again this was bestowed on the Brahmins by him, who executed the law perfectly and one who desired to give all …..

Thought the inscription is incomplete and in damaged condition, this plays a vital role in the list of inscriptions of Tamilnadu.
