COḸAPURA INSCRIPTION OF KAMPAVARMA PALLAVA

The following inscription was found on a long stone that was dug up Sri. G. Venkoba Rao from a ruined śiva temple at Coḹapuram. The record is bilingual and starts with Sanskrit and ends with Tamil portion. The Sanskrit portion has 2½ verses and inscribed in Grantha characters of 9th CE. The Tamil portion refers the 8th regnal year of Vijaya Kampavarmā. The Tamil portion informs that a Paḷḷippaḍai (samādhi temple) was built by some Rājāditya of Gaṅga dynasty after the death of his father Pṛthvī Gaṅgaraiyar. According to my revision to Pallava chronology the record can be dated as 856 CE. The pṛthvī Gaṅgaraiyar referred here cannot be compared with Pṛthvīpati of western gaṅga dynasty since his son is Mārasiṃha and Rājāditya. Hence he can be taken as the branch family of Gaṅga dynasty.

The record is published in Epigraphia Indica Volume VII.
