COPPER PLATE INSCRIPTIONS OF KĀÑCĪ KĀMAKOṬI PĪṬHAM – 2

Copper plate inscription of Vīra Narasiha Deva

There are four sets of Copper plate grants in the collection of Kāñcī Kāmakoṭi pīṭha that were given by the Vijayanagara kings. The earliest of the set belongs to the reign of Vīranarsiṃha of Tuḷuva dynasty, brother of the well known Kṛṣṇa Devarāya. He ruled from 1505 CE to 1509 CE.

The inscription is composed in Sanskrit and inscribed in Nadināgarī characters of 16th CE. The inscriptions starts with the invocatory part which is found in other Vijayanagar inscriptions. The father of the donor is Narasa and he is eulogized in the plates. He was the performer of sixteen Mahādānas at holy places like Rāmeśvara and installed victory pillar after subduing Ceras, Coḹas and Pāṇḍyas.

The object of this grant was to donate the villages Eḷicchūr and Veṇpākkam to the head of the mutt Paramahaṃsa Parivrājakavarya Mahādeva Sarasvatī, disciple of Sadāśiva Sarasvatī on the auspicious Mahodaya day. The villages are said to be in Ceṅgāṭṭu koṭṭam, a sub division of Candragiri Rājya of Jayaṅkoṇḍa Coḹamaṇḍala.

The date of the inscription is mentioned is referred as śaka year 1429 and Mahodaya Puṇya kāla of the Lunar month Māgha is referred. The date cannot be correctly fixed. Since the śaka year and the cyclic name are not matching. Since this is a common error, can be omitted. The approximate date would be January 31st, 1508 CE which seems to have Amāvāsya, Monday and śravaṇa nakṣatra, the required components for Mahodaya Puṇya kāla.

  1. Dear Sir

I was interested in your statement “The object of the grant was to donate the vollages Elicchur and Venbakkam………… “. My ancestral village is Vanbakkam aka Venbakkam and part of my initials. On searching in google maps and TN Gov records , there are three Vanbakkam aka Venbakkam , all in the Kanchipuram , Chingleput , (or is it Anna District nowadays?) . I doubt whether the Venbakkam referred in the inscription refers to my ancestral village as there is another closer to Kanchipuram. Did the Cengattuk Kottam subsequently known as Chengalpattu. Anyway, it is interesting.

    Regards

    Vanbakkam Vijayaraghavan
